The alley reeked of damp cardboard and something vaguely metallic, a scent that clung to the back of my throat like a forgotten promise. I huddled closer to the overflowing dumpster, the rough brick scraping against my worn jacket. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of pure panic. Every shadow seemed to stretch and writhe, every distant siren a harbinger of doom. They were still out there, I knew it. The feeling of being watched, that icy prickle on my skin, hadn't faded since I’d bolted from my apartment. My ordinary life had shattered into a million glittering, terrifying pieces, and I was left scrambling in the shrapnel.

A soft cough, barely audible above the city’s hum, made me jump. I spun around, my breath catching. Standing a few feet away, bathed in the dim glow of a flickering streetlamp, was a man. He wasn't imposing, not in the way the shadowy figures from my visions had been. He was older, his face a roadmap of gentle wrinkles, and his eyes, even in the meager light, held a surprising warmth. He wore a simple, dark coat, and in his hands, he held a worn leather-bound book.

"They are relentless," he said, his voice a low rumble, like pebbles smoothed by the tide. It wasn't a question.
