The air in Elias’s small workshop always smelled of dried herbs and something faintly metallic, like old pennies. Tonight, though, it also carried the sharp tang of Elias’s own sorrow. He’d been quiet for a long time, staring into the flickering flame of an oil lamp, his fingers tracing patterns on the worn wooden table. I sat opposite him, the star sticker on my forehead a cool, steady presence, a constant reminder of why I was here. The flicker, thankfully, was safe with a kind baker on the other side of town, a temporary haven Elias had arranged.

“It wasn’t always like this, Anya,” Elias began, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. He looked up, his eyes, usually so sharp and knowing, were clouded with a deep sadness. “Once, this place was… brighter. Filled with laughter. My daughter, Elara, she was the light of it all.”

He paused, and the silence stretched, thick with unspoken grief. I waited, my heart aching for the man who had become my unlikely protector. He’d taught me so much, pushing me to unlock powers I never knew I possessed, but he rarely spoke of his own past.
