In the center of the clearing stood a circle of stones, worn smooth by centuries of wind and rain, each etched with symbols that danced at the edge of her vision. They turned as she entered, their eyes, like pools of liquid moonlight, fixing upon her. There were three of them: an elder whose silver hair cascaded like a waterfall down her back, her face a map of gentle wisdom; a man whose presence radiated a quiet strength, his gaze steady and observant; and a woman whose spirit seemed as wild and untamed as the wind rustling through the leaves, her movements quick and alert. Anya’s heart, usually a steady rhythm, fluttered like a trapped bird. She clutched the fabric of her simple tunic, a sudden awareness of her ordinariness washing over her.
