Anya felt it first as a prickle, a fleeting sensation like the brush of moth wings against her skin. It was a whisper of awareness, a sense that the world, once a familiar tapestry of muted colours, now held a deeper, more vibrant hue. The star on her forehead, nestled against her brow, pulsed with a warmth that spread through her like sunlight. Each day, it seemed, a new layer of her ordinary existence peeled away, revealing something luminous and utterly new beneath.

But today, the luminescence was tinged with a different kind of energy. It was a tremor in the air, a shift in the familiar rhythm of her street. As she walked home from the market, the usual cheerful chatter of her neighbours seemed to fade, replaced by a low hum that vibrated at the edge of her hearing. The dappled sunlight filtering through the ancient oak trees overhead, which usually painted dancing patterns on the pavement, now felt… watchful.

Anya’s steps faltered. She paused, tilting her head, her gaze sweeping across the quiet facades of the houses. Nothing seemed out of place. A cat stretched languidly on a windowsill, a child’s bright ball lay forgotten on a lawn, and Mrs. Gable’s prize-winning roses bloomed with their usual defiant scent. Yet, the feeling persisted, a cold tendril of unease coiling in her stomach.
