The air in the hidden chamber hummed, a low thrum that vibrated not just in Anya’s ears but deep within her bones. Elder Lyra’s eyes, pools of ancient starlight, held a sorrow that mirrored the dim glow of the crystal lamps. “Not all who walk the hidden paths are friends, Anya,” she said, her voice a gentle rustle of autumn leaves. “The organization’s tendrils reach further than you know.”
Anya’s heart clenched. She had begun to feel a kinship with some of the others she’d met since the star had bloomed on her forehead. There was Kael, with his quicksilver wit and even quicker hands, who had shown her how to weave threads of light into shields. And Elara, whose gentle touch could soothe the restless energy that sometimes surged through Anya. Had they been playing a game all along? The thought sent a chill through her, colder than any winter wind.
“Who?” Anya’s voice was barely a whisper, laced with a fear she hadn't known before. This was a different kind of fear than the one that had gripped her when she first realized the organization was hunting her. This was the fear of the heart, the betrayal that cut deeper than any blade.
