The air, usually a gentle caress, turned sharp and brittle. Anya felt it first as a prickle on her skin, a tightening in her chest, the way the world holds its breath before a storm. The familiar hum of the city seemed to warp, a dissonant chord vibrating beneath the surface of the ordinary. Her star, nestled against her forehead, pulsed with a faint, insistent warmth, a tiny sun against the encroaching chill. It was a silent alarm, a beacon warning of a darkness that had finally found its way to her doorstep.

She was walking home from the library, the weight of borrowed books a comforting anchor in her hands, when the shadows detached themselves from the alleyways. They weren't just patches of deeper darkness; they were bodies, fluid and swift, moving with a predatory grace that sent a shiver down her spine. Three of them. They moved in unison, their faces obscured by the gloom, their intentions as clear as a slammed door.

Anya’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. The books tumbled from her grasp, scattering across the pavement like fallen leaves. Fear, cold and sharp, threatened to paralyze her. But then, the star on her forehead flared, a silent command. It was a whisper of courage, a reminder of the power that now resided within her.
