Chapter 8
Lord Ashworth's Shadow
News of the rediscovered garden, and the whispers of its unique flora, inevitably reach the ears of Lord Ashworth, the ostentatious owner of the neighboring estate. Known for his vanity and his unnaturally perfect rose gardens, Ashworth arrives unannounced, his presence casting a long shadow over the tranquil sanctuary. His eyes, sharp and avaricious, scan the garden, convinced it holds a secret power he can exploit for his own aggrandizement.
The air in the hidden garden hummed with a peculiar sort of contentment. Elara, having just coaxed a particularly stubborn sprout into unfurling its tiny leaves, felt a smug satisfaction ripple through her. The lily, perched regally at the garden’s heart, seemed to offer a silent, if still somewhat judgmental, nod of approval. Its petals, a creamy white that bled into the faintest blush of dawn, unfurled with a languid grace that Elara could only dream of emulating. Today, it had smelled faintly of almond biscotti, a welcome change from yesterday’s unsettling aroma of burnt sugar and existential dread.
She was just contemplating whether a third cup of tea was strictly necessary when a shadow, long and ostentatious, fell across the mossy path. It wasn't the gentle shadow of a passing cloud; this was a shadow with a distinct, designer label attached. Elara squinted upwards. Looming over the crumbling stone wall, like a particularly flamboyant vulture surveying its next meal, was Lord Ashworth. He was a man who appeared to have been sculpted from polished mahogany and regret, his silver hair swept back with the kind of precision that suggested a team of tiny, highly trained squirrels.
"Well, well, well," Lord Ashworth boomed, his voice echoing with the forced joviality of a game show host announcing a particularly disappointing prize. He clambered over the wall with an agility that belied his rather portly frame, landing with a theatrical flourish that sent a flock of startled sparrows scattering. "What have we here? A forgotten Eden? And who might *you* be, little woodland sprite?"
