Chapter 4

The Pastry-Inducing Petals

As Elara continues her visits, the magnificent lily begins to exhibit peculiar behaviors. One day its petals droop dramatically, as if in mourning, only to unfurl with renewed vigor the next. More bizarrely, the lily's fragrance starts to shift. It becomes intoxicating, subtly altering Elara's senses and conjuring an overwhelming, specific craving for the little-known, lavender-infused madeleines her grandmother used to bake – a pastry she hasn't thought of in years. The floral capriciousness leaves her bewildered, yet strangely eager to understand its whims.

The lily, in its infinite wisdom, seemed to be experiencing a rather dramatic mid-life crisis. Or perhaps it was just a Tuesday. Elara found herself tiptoeing into the overgrown sanctuary, a damp, leafy hush greeting her like a shy hug. Yesterday, the Magnificent Lily had been a picture of regal disdain, petals held aloft with the arrogance of a duchess at a ball. Today, however, it looked as though it had just received news of a particularly devastating tax increase. Its magnificent white petals were splayed, drooping mournfully, like a choir of sopranos who had just run out of breath.

"Oh, for heaven's sake," Elara murmured, pushing aside a rogue bramble that snagged her jumper. "Are we performing Hamlet today? Because I'm really more of a light comedy person, myself."

The journals of Genevieve Dubois, her great-great-something-or-other, were proving to be an endless source of bewilderment and, frankly, secondhand embarrassment. Genevieve, it turned out, had been a woman of *intense* emotions. Her descriptions of gardening were less about soil pH and more about the agonizing ecstasy of watching a seedling break ground, or the utter despair of a slug invasion. And her love life? Well, that was a whole other chapter, one Elara suspected involved more furtive glances and clandestine meetings than was strictly healthy for a woman of refined sensibilities.
