Elara, who had been contemplating the existential dread of a slug attempting to scale a particularly slippery hosta leaf, looked up. She’d been expecting him, of course. She brushed a stray strand of hair from her forehead, a faint smile playing on her lips. Her hands, usually a little shaky when faced with an audience, felt steady now, rooted like the ancient oak at the edge of the estate.
