The alley air hung thick and still, a stagnant breath caught between crumbling brick and overflowing refuse. Liam, his body aching with a weariness that went deeper than muscle, leaned against a damp wall, the rough texture a familiar comfort. He’d learned to find solace in the overlooked corners of the city, the places most people hurried past with averted eyes. It was here, amidst the grime and the forgotten, that his peculiar brand of luck seemed to manifest most readily, a subtle nudge in his favor when the world seemed determined to push him down.

A rustle from the shadows ahead broke his contemplation. He tensed, his hand instinctively reaching for the worn leather pouch at his hip, though he knew it held nothing of use against any real threat. His ‘Minor Inconvenience’ talent, while occasionally useful for tripping an assailant or causing a sudden gust of wind to obscure his escape, was hardly a weapon.

A figure emerged, cloaked and hooded, a silhouette against the weak glow of a distant streetlamp. Liam’s heart, a traitorous organ, hammered against his ribs. This was it, he thought. The organization. They’d finally caught up.
