The chill that had settled into Liam’s bones since waking in this unfamiliar world seemed to deepen. It wasn't the biting cold of winter, but a more insidious dread, a prickling sensation that whispered of unseen eyes. He’d grown accustomed to the gnawing uncertainty of his existence, the gnawing suspicion that he was fundamentally out of sync with everything around him. His talent, "Minor Inconvenience," was a constant, embarrassing reminder of his inadequacy in a world where power was measured in dazzling displays of elemental fury or impossible feats of strength.

Today, however, the unease had a sharper edge. It felt less like a general anxiety and more like a specific, directed threat. He’d been scavenging for scraps near the city’s outer markets, the usual cacophony of hawkers and haggling a comforting, if mundane, soundtrack to his solitary existence. But a sudden, jarring silence had fallen, a void in the usual din that made the hairs on his arms stand on end. He’d looked up, his eyes scanning the milling crowds, searching for the source of the disruption.

That’s when he saw him.
