Chapter 7
Shadows Stirring
Unbeknownst to Liam, his burgeoning power has attracted unwanted attention. A clandestine organization, the Obsidian Hand, learns of his SSS-rank talent.
The chill of the early morning air did little to stir Liam from his uneasy slumber. He lay sprawled on the thin mattress, the rough weave of the blanket scratching against his skin. The room, sparse and functional, offered no comfort, only the stark reminder of his precarious existence. A persistent ache throbbed behind his eyes, a phantom limb of memory he couldn't quite grasp. His talent, "Minor Inconvenience," felt like a cruel joke in this world of burgeoning power. He could make a shoelace come untied, a pen run dry, a door stick just long enough to be frustrating. Useful? Perhaps for a petty thief, but hardly for someone trying to carve out a life in a society that valued raw, overt strength.
He sat up, the movement stiff, and swung his legs over the side of the bed. The floorboards creaked a mournful tune. Outside, the city was already beginning its daily symphony of noise and motion. He could hear the distant rumble of carts, the sharp cries of vendors, the murmur of a thousand lives intersecting. None of them seemed to carry the same gnawing emptiness he did. He dressed quickly, the worn fabric of his clothes familiar, a small anchor in the sea of his uncertainty.
He made his way to the marketplace, the usual haunt for those seeking odd jobs or cheap sustenance. The air was thick with the scent of spices, roasting meats, and something vaguely floral, a cloying sweetness that did nothing to lift his spirits. He scanned the faces, looking for a sign, a nod, anything that might lead to a few coins. He saw a fruit vendor struggling to balance a precarious stack of crates, a common sight, but one that, for Liam, often had an unexpected outcome. As if on cue, a gust of wind, seemingly out of nowhere, whipped through the narrow alley, just enough to send one of the crates tumbling. Apples, plump and crimson, scattered across the cobblestones.
