The alley reeked of stale refuse and desperation. Liam, hunched against the chill that seeped through his threadbare coat, traced the intricate carvings on the tarnished locket. It had been a foolish impulse, picking it up from the grimy street vendor’s stall, another small, pointless expenditure of the few coins he possessed. Yet, since finding it, a curious shift had occurred. The persistent drizzle that had threatened to soak him to the bone had inexplicably lessened, the wind seemed to sigh rather than howl, and the snarling stray dog that had been eyeing his meager rations had suddenly, and with a disgruntled huff, wandered off.

He’d tested it, cautiously at first. A dropped coin that always landed heads up. A near-miss with a speeding carriage that somehow veered just enough. A beggar’s outstretched hand that, instead of being met with indifference, received a surprisingly generous donation from a passerby Liam had thought far too stern. Each instance, a tiny ripple in the predictable current of his life, a subtle nudge that smoothed his path just enough to be noticeable, yet not so much as to draw undue attention.

“Minor Inconvenience,” he muttered, the words tasting like ash. It was a joke, a cruel cosmic jest. His talent, the supposed defining characteristic of his existence in this world, was to cause a slight, fleeting annoyance. A stubbed toe. A misplaced key. A word forgotten mid-sentence. He’d spent weeks, months, trying to weaponize it, to find some sliver of utility in its pathetic scope. He’d imagined tripping up bullies, causing guards to drop their weapons, creating distractions. But the effects were always too small, too easily dismissed as simple bad luck for everyone else.
