The cobblestones of the market square were slick with an early evening drizzle, reflecting the flickering gaslights in fractured, wavering patterns. Liam, huddled deeper into his threadbare coat, clutched the meager coins in his pocket, the chill seeping through the worn fabric. He’d spent the better part of the afternoon hawking a few chipped earthenware pots, his ‘Minor Inconvenience’ talent doing little to attract customers. In fact, it seemed to actively repel them. A sudden gust of wind would snatch a patron’s hat just as they approached his stall, or a stray dog would choose that exact moment to bolt past, scattering potential buyers. It was a talent that bred only frustration, a constant, petty annoyance that mirrored the gnawing emptiness in his gut.

He’d barely managed to trade a dented kettle for a thick, if slightly stale, loaf of bread. As he turned to leave the bustling square, a cacophony erupted. A merchant’s cart, overloaded with crates of ripe, red apples, had lost a wheel, sending its contents tumbling across the muddy ground. The apples, plump and juicy, rolled in a chaotic tide towards a group of children playing near the edge of the square. A collective gasp rose from the onlookers. The cart, its driver wrestling with the runaway reins, was veering precariously close to the oblivious children.

Liam felt a familiar surge of helplessness. What could he do? His talent was for *minor* inconveniences, not for stopping runaway carts and averting disaster. He mentally cursed his pathetic ability, wishing with a desperate intensity that something, anything, would happen to prevent the inevitable.
