Chapter 19
The Normal Anomaly
Liam lives his life, a quiet anomaly in the world. His SSS-rank talent remains a subtle undercurrent, ensuring his continued survival and well-being without fanfare.
The aroma of brewing coffee, a familiar comfort, wafted through Liam’s small apartment. Sunlight, unfiltered by any particular drama, streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Liam stirred a spoonful of sugar into his mug, the clinking of ceramic a gentle counterpoint to the distant hum of city life. He was, by all appearances, a man adrift in the unremarkable. His days unfolded with a quiet rhythm, punctuated by the mundane tasks of existence: grocery shopping, paying bills, the occasional awkward conversation with a neighbor.
His talent. The word itself felt like a misplaced boast, a cruel jest whispered by a universe that had already robbed him of his memories. “Minor Inconvenience.” He’d stumbled upon its official designation in a dusty tome unearthed from a forgotten corner of the city’s archives, a place he’d only found because a sudden, inexplicable downpour had forced him to seek shelter. The book, bound in cracked leather, spoke of the stratified world of Talents, from the ostentatious displays of elemental control to the subtle manipulations of the mind. And there, in a footnote, was his: a talent so laughably insignificant it was almost an insult.
Yet, something had shifted since he’d found the artifact. The small, obsidian pendant, cool and smooth against his skin, seemed to resonate with his peculiar ability. It didn’t grant him power, not in the way the grand Talents displayed. Instead, it felt like an anchor, a silent witness to the subtle currents that now seemed to guide his life. When he’d been desperately short on rent, a forgotten savings bond from a distant relative he didn't remember had appeared in his mailbox. When a mugger had lunged at him in a darkened alley, the man’s shoelaces had inexplicably snapped, sending him tumbling to the ground, giving Liam just enough time to escape. These weren’t grand victories, but quiet nudges, improbable coincidences that always, *always*, landed him on his feet.
