The air in Silas Thorne’s secluded study hung thick with the scent of aged parchment and something else, something metallic and faintly acrid, like ozone after a distant storm. Liam sat across from the man, the worn leather of the armchair creaking in the silence. Silas, usually a whirlwind of cryptic pronouncements and darting glances, was unusually still, his gaze fixed on a single, brittle page illuminated by the flickering lamplight. Liam’s own unease, a constant companion since his awakening, seemed to coalesce in the oppressive quiet.
“You say these fragments… they relate to me?” Liam’s voice, barely a whisper, felt alien in the room. He still struggled with the dissonance between the normalcy he projected and the cosmic anomaly he was.
Silas finally looked up, his eyes, pools of indeterminate color, held a depth that always unsettled Liam. “Fragmented, yes. Like shards of a shattered mirror, reflecting only glimpses. But the patterns, Liam, the patterns are undeniable.” He tapped the page with a long, bony finger. “This refers to ‘The Unraveling.’ A catastrophic event, centuries ago. And the entity responsible… they called it the ‘Probability Weaver.’”
