Leo’s heart thumped a frantic rhythm against his ribs, a wild bird desperate for escape. The air crackled with an unseen energy, heavy and expectant, as he tiptoed through the deserted marketplace. Dusk had draped its velvety cloak over the town, painting familiar stalls in shades of indigo and charcoal, deepening the shadows until they seemed to writhe. But Leo wasn’t looking at the ordinary shadows. He was looking for *the* shadow, the one that had been a knot of unease in the town’s stomach for weeks.

He remembered the name he’d seen, shimmering like frost on a windowpane, when the figure had first drifted past the bakery: *Solitude*. It wasn’t a word, not really, but a feeling made manifest, a profound ache of being utterly, irrevocably alone. It was a name so heavy with sorrow that Leo’s own chest had tightened just seeing it. He reached the old fountain, its stone cherubs weathered and mossy, usually a hub of laughter and splashing water. Tonight, it was a silent sentinel in the encroaching darkness. And there, by the fountain’s edge, it coalesced. Not a person, not quite, but a ripple in the air, a silhouette woven from moonlight and mist. It was taller than any man, its form indistinct, as if it were constantly dissolving and reforming. A faint, sorrowful hum emanated from it, a sound that tugged at Leo’s soul.
