Leo sat across from Elder Elara, the afternoon sun dappling through the ancient oak in her garden, painting dancing patterns on the worn wooden table between them. The air hummed with the gentle buzz of bees and the faint scent of lavender, a stark contrast to the knot of unease that had been tightening in Leo’s chest. He clutched the smooth, grey stone he’d found by the river, his fingers tracing its cool surface, a small comfort against the enormity of what Elder Elara was saying.
