The Architect of Light

Elina begins to consciously use her own inner light to counteract the staircase's melancholic pull, not just for herself, but as a beacon for others who might wander too close.

Elina found herself standing at the very bottom, the air thick with the scent of dust and something else… something like forgotten dreams. The spiral staircase twisted upwards, each step a different shade of twilight, a deep indigo bleeding into a bruised plum, then a smoky amethyst. It wasn't the same as the vibrant, almost dizzying hues she'd seen before. These colors were softer, sadder, like a lullaby sung in a minor key. Lumina, their form still a little transparent, hovered near her shoulder, a faint tremor running through their wispy edges.

“It’s always like this, at the bottom,” Lumina whispered, their voice barely a breath of wind. “The deepest memories, the ones that ache the most.”

Elina looked at Lumina, at the muted glow that was their essence. She remembered Elder Rowan’s gentle words, how the community’s shared joy was like a strong, warm sun. She thought of the laughter of her friends, the comforting scent of baking bread from Mrs. Gable’s kitchen, the way the sunflowers in the town square always seemed to turn their faces towards the light. These were her colors, her present. And they felt so much more real, so much more *alive*, than the swirling mists of regret that clung to the staircase.
