Chapter 14
Lumina's First Step Back
Lumina, inspired by Elina, ventures near the staircase's entrance alone. They don't descend but stand at the threshold, a small victory over their fear, a sign of growing strength.
Lumina stood at the very edge of the world Elina had shown them, the place where the familiar, sun-drenched cobblestones of their town gave way to the shimmering, uncertain twilight. It wasn't the bottom of the spiral, nor was it the bright, open sky above. It was a space in between, a place of hesitant possibility. The old bookshelf, heavy with the scent of aged paper and dust, stood sentinel, its dark wood a comforting anchor against the kaleidoscope of hues that pulsed just beyond its reach.
Elina had left them here, a gentle hand on their shoulder, a promise of shared laughter waiting in the town square. "Just stand here, Lumina," she’d said, her voice as warm as a freshly baked cookie. "You don't have to go down. You don't even have to go up. Just… be here with it. And know that I'm right there."
And so, Lumina stood. Their wispy form, still a pale imitation of the vibrant beings Elina described from her own world, trembled slightly. The air here was different. It hummed with the echoes of stories not yet fully formed, of feelings not yet resolved. The colors weren't as overwhelming as they had been before, when Elina had first pulled them from the depths. Now, at the threshold, they were like distant music, a symphony of past emotions playing softly. There was a swirl of deep sapphire, tinged with the quiet ache of a forgotten lullaby. A flash of emerald, carrying the sharp, sweet pang of a first friendship. And then, a fleeting blush of rose, the ghost of a shared dream.
