The air in the King’s chamber, usually alive with the faint scent of aged parchment and polished oak, felt thick, suffocating. Nicholas sat on the edge of his bed, the rough linen sheets a stark contrast to the silken robes he usually wore. Tonight, the weight of his crown felt heavier than any metal, pressing down not on his head, but on his very soul. Elena sat beside him, her presence a gentle warmth, a quiet hum against the storm raging within him. Her silver light, usually a soft diffusion, seemed to pulse with a knowing tenderness, a silent invitation.
"It comes," Nicholas murmured, his voice a low rumble, barely audible. He didn't need to name it. They both felt the familiar tightening in his chest, the icy tendrils coiling around his heart. The memories, always lurking at the periphery, were beginning to claw their way forward, demanding an audience.
Elena’s hand found his, her touch cool and steady. “Let it,” she whispered, her voice a melody of comfort. “Let it come, my love. We will face it together.”
