The air in Aethelgard had grown heavy, not with the familiar weight of winter’s approach, but with something far more insidious. It was a creeping chill that settled in the bones, a subtle discord that frayed the edges of everyday life. Nicholas felt it most acutely, a prickling unease that mirrored the disquiet stirring within him. The Shadow Dragon’s power, a tempest he was still learning to command, pulsed erratically, as if reacting to an unseen disturbance. Elena, ever his calm center, stood beside him on the parapet, her silver light a soft counterpoint to the bruised twilight sky.
“Do you feel it, my love?” she murmured, her voice a silken thread woven through the growing tension. Her hand rested lightly on his arm, a grounding touch that always managed to pull him back from the precipice of his own anxieties.
Nicholas nodded, his gaze sweeping across the darkening landscape. The usual vibrancy of the royal gardens seemed muted, the leaves on the ancient oaks hanging limply, as if drained of their lifeblood. “It’s… a wrongness. A rot that’s not of the natural world.” He clenched his jaw, the phantom ache of old wounds resurfacing. “It’s here, Elena. Whatever we fought in the shadows, it has found a way to seep into the light.”
