The air in the cavern tasted of ancient stone and something else, something sharp and electric that prickled the back of Nicholas’s throat. It was a smell that clung to the very marrow of his bones, a scent that had been growing bolder with each passing moon. Here, deep beneath the roots of Aethelgard, the raw essence of the Shadow Dragon pulsed, a living, breathing tempest contained within the earth’s embrace.
