The silk of her stage dress felt alien against Fasha’s skin, a stark contrast to the roughspun tunic she now wore. The familiar scent of cheap perfume and stale beer from the dive bar where she’d sung just that morning felt a thousand miles away, replaced by the sharp, clean tang of pine and damp earth. Disbelief still warred with a burgeoning sense of dread in her chest, a tight knot that refused to loosen. Cookie, perched on a moss-covered boulder beside her, his iridescent wings shimmering even in the dim forest light, watched her with an unnerving stillness.

“You accept, then?” his voice was a low murmur, like pebbles rolling in a stream.

Fasha nodded, her throat tight. The visions Cookie had conjured, fleeting glimpses of a world consumed by fire and fury – orcs with tusks bared, their eyes burning with a primal rage, and elves with silvered arrows nocked, their faces etched with cold determination – had seared themselves into her mind. They were too vivid, too real, to dismiss as mere fantasy. The weight of it settled on her, heavy and suffocating. Her voice, the instrument she’d always thought of as her own personal magic, was now a weapon, a shield, a fragile bridge between two warring worlds.
