Chapter 17
Dawn of Reckoning
Agnė's article is published. The nation awakens to the shocking truth of the Sodra scandal, igniting public outrage and demanding accountability.
The ink, still wet and smelling faintly of a future unfolding, had barely dried on the newsprint before the city began to stir. Agnė, her eyes gritty from a night spent wrestling with words and the gnawing fear of their potential impact, watched the first rays of dawn paint the sky in hues of hesitant rose and bruised violet. The air, usually thick with the exhaust of early morning buses and the murmur of a waking metropolis, felt taut, expectant, as if the very atmosphere held its breath. It was a truth that had begun as a flicker, a cryptic notice about pension reform, and had grown into a wildfire, consuming the carefully constructed facade of Sodra and exposing the rot beneath.
She remembered the hushed conversations in the dimly lit corridors of the newspaper office, the editor’s brow furrowed with a mixture of apprehension and grim determination. He had understood the gravity of what she was about to unleash, the potential for upheaval, the danger that lurked in the pursuit of such a story. He had looked at her, his gaze steady, and had simply nodded, a silent acknowledgment of the precipice they both stood upon. "Go with it, Agnė," he had said, his voice low. "The people deserve to know."
Now, as the city began to exhale, the first echoes of her words began to ripple outwards. A lone truck driver, his face etched with fatigue, pulled over to the side of the road, his eyes scanning the headlines of a discarded newspaper. A faint frown creased his forehead as he recognized the name ‘Sodra’ and the stark pronouncement of ‘Hidden Scheme.’ He shook his head, a weary sigh escaping his lips, and continued his journey, the seed of unease planted within him.
