A Calculated Risk
Jonas, under immense pressure, leaks more information, creating a diversion to protect Agnė. His actions become increasingly desperate and dangerous.
The air in Jonas Valaitis’s cramped office at Sodra, usually thick with the scent of stale coffee and aging paper, now hummed with a nervous energy that clung to him like a second skin. Outside, Vilnius was beginning its slow descent into twilight, the sky bleeding from a bruised purple into a deep, inky blue. Inside, the fluorescent lights cast a harsh, unforgiving glare on the stacks of documents that threatened to consume him. He ran a trembling hand through his thinning hair, the weight of his secret pressing down on his chest, stealing his breath.
He knew Agnė was close. Too close. The subtle inquiries, the pointed questions in carefully worded emails – they were the tell-tale signs of her relentless pursuit. And he, Jonas, was caught in the crossfire. He had planted the first seeds of doubt, a desperate, almost foolish act born of a conscience long ago battered into submission. Now, those seeds were sprouting, reaching towards a light he had hoped would remain forever obscured.
Viktoras Kairys’s words, delivered with that unnerving, smooth charm, echoed in his mind. “Agnė Petrauskaitė. A bright spark, wouldn’t you agree, Jonas? Such idealism. A shame it could be so easily extinguished.” The implication hung in the air, a silent, chilling threat. Kairys saw her as an annoyance, a gnat buzzing around the grand edifice of his ambition. Jonas, however, saw a reflection of his younger self – a fierce belief in the power of truth, a belief he had long since buried beneath layers of compromise and fear.
