The air in the old town square hung heavy with the scent of damp cobblestones and the lingering perfume of night-blooming jasmine. It was a clandestine rendezvous, a whisper against the roar of the city, a secret shared under the indifferent gaze of a sliver of moon. Agnė arrived early, her heart a frantic bird trapped in her chest. The shadows seemed to lengthen and twist, each one a potential threat, each rustle of leaves a phantom footstep. She pulled her coat tighter, the rough wool a small comfort against the chill that had nothing to do with the autumn air.

The minutes stretched into an eternity, each tick a hammer blow against her resolve. Doubts, like insidious weeds, began to sprout in the fertile ground of her anxiety. What if this was a trap?
