The air in the 'Jurbarko Laikraštis' office, usually thick with the scent of ink and stale coffee, buzzed with a different kind of energy. It was a hum of quiet triumph, a soft echo of the seismic shift Lina Petraitytė’s exposé had triggered. Sunlight, streaming through the dusty windowpanes, seemed to illuminate not just the worn linoleum floor, but the newfound hope that had settled over Jurbarkas, and indeed, over Lithuania. Lina, usually hunched over her typewriter, her brow furrowed in concentration, found herself the center of an unfamiliar, gentle spotlight.
Jonas Valaitis, her editor, a man whose usual demeanor was a carefully cultivated blend of world-weary cynicism and paternal concern, beamed at her. His smile, crinkling the corners of his eyes, was brighter than Lina had ever seen it. "Lina," he said, his voice a low rumble of pride, "you've done it. You've truly done it."
Lina felt a blush creep up her neck. She fiddled with a loose thread on her worn cardigan. "It was Elena, Jonas. And the ledger. I just… I just told the story."
