The air in the Jurbarko Laikraštis office crackled with an energy Lina hadn't felt since the day she’d first cracked the Sodra cipher. It was a heady mix of anticipation and sheer, unadulterated terror. Jonas, usually a picture of calm, paced the narrow confines of his office, his brow furrowed deeper than usual. He held the printed pages of Lina’s exposé, his fingers tracing the bold headlines.
“Are you sure about this, Lina?” he asked, his voice a low rumble that held a tremor of concern. “This is… this is bigger than anything we’ve ever touched.”
Lina met his gaze, her own eyes blazing with a fierce determination that belied the knot of apprehension in her stomach. She clutched the worn notebook containing Elena’s damning ledger, the weight of it a constant reminder of the trust placed in her. “I’m more sure than I’ve ever been, Jonas. Elena’s ledger, the coded messages, Vytautas Kazlauskas’s desperation… it all fits.” She paused, taking a deep breath. “If we don’t publish this, who will? These people, they’re stealing from the very people who built this country. They’re stealing from our future.”
