Chapter 7

Awakening to Shadows

7 min read

The Moonpetal’s magic was a silken blanket, soft and deep, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Elara was truly asleep. But sleep, as she was beginning to learn, was not always a peaceful escape. This time, the darkness behind her eyelids wasn’t empty. It pulsed with a faint, disquieting light, and within it, shadows danced. They were not the comforting, amorphous shapes of a normal dream, but sharp, angular things, like shards of obsidian, that seemed to watch her. A low hum vibrated through the dreamscape, a sound that tickled the edges of her hearing and made her skin prickle. It was as if the very air was whispering secrets she couldn’t quite decipher.

Then, the fragmented memories began to surface, not like a flood, but like tiny, iridescent bubbles rising from an unseen depth. A flash of bright red, a feeling of cool bark against her cheek, the faint scent of damp earth. A forgotten toy, a little wooden bird with one wing chipped, appeared for a fleeting moment, held in small hands that were undeniably her own. A snatch of a lullaby, sung in a voice that was both familiar and strange, drifted through the shadowy space. These glimpses were like puzzle pieces scattered across a vast, dark floor, and Elara felt a growing frustration, a desperate need to fit them together. Why did these fragments feel so important? Why did they stir such a pang of longing in her chest?

The next night, the Moonpetal bloomed again in her mind, its ethereal glow a beacon in the gathering dusk. She ate another petal, and the deep slumber returned, but with it, the shadows grew bolder. They coalesced, taking on more distinct forms, though still shrouded in an unnerving haze. They seemed to writhe and twist, their movements jerky and unnatural, like puppets with tangled strings. The whispers were louder now, a chorus of indistinct voices that seemed to slither into her ears, weaving tales of forgotten paths and lost things. Elara felt a growing unease, a sense that these shadowy figures were not just figments of her imagination, but something more. They felt…aware.
