Chapter 4

The Guardian of Slumber

8 min read

The Moonpetal had worked its magic, a soft, silken blanket of sleep descending upon Elara for the first time in what felt like a lifetime. But this sleep, while deep and restorative, was not entirely peaceful. As she drifted through the velvety darkness, fragmented images flickered like fireflies. A flash of emerald green, the scent of damp earth, and a hushed, urgent whisper that seemed to coil around her. The shadowy figure from her dream, though gone with the dawn, left a faint imprint on her waking thoughts, a question mark hanging in the air.

Lyra, her best friend, found Elara sitting by her window, a sketchbook open on her lap, but her gaze fixed on the distant, gnarled branches of the old oak tree at the edge of the woods. Elara usually filled her sketchbooks with vibrant colours and playful creatures, but today, her pencil hovered uselessly over the page.
