Escalation Station

The air in my bedroom, which had been so thick with giggles and the smell of pepperoni pizza just hours ago, now felt thin and sharp, like the edge of a broken shard of glass. Katie and I were sprawled on my bed, the remnants of our movie marathon scattered around us – empty popcorn bowls, a half-eaten bag of gummy worms, and the fuzzy blanket we’d used to build our fort earlier. But the cozy feeling was gone, replaced by a heavy, awkward silence that hummed between us.

It had started with something so small, so silly. We’d been talking about school, about who was in our classes next year, and somehow, the conversation had drifted, as it always did lately, to James. Katie had been describing this funny thing he’d said during recess, and I’d felt that familiar little flutter in my stomach, the one that made me want to blush.

“He’s just so… funny, you know?” Katie sighed, her eyes dreamy. “And his hair is like, perfectly messy.”
