Movie Night Mishaps

The opening credits of “Sparkle Unicorns: The Quest for the Rainbow Gem” began to roll, filling the room with a soft, magical glow. Katie, nestled on one side of the giant beanbag chair, munched happily on her popcorn, her eyes glued to the screen. I was on the other side, a little too close to the edge, my own bowl of popcorn sitting untouched on the floor. The movie was okay, all glitter and adventure, but honestly, my mind was a million miles away, drifting towards a certain sandy-haired boy with a smile that could melt glaciers. James.

We’d been best friends, Katie and I, since kindergarten. We’d built sandcastles together, shared scraped knees and secrets, and now, at twelve, we were supposed to be sharing everything. Except, this one thing. This huge, sparkly, James-shaped thing. It had all started a few weeks ago, with that awkward group project in science. James had been in our group, and suddenly, everything he said, everything he did, felt electric. I’d noticed how he’d tucked his hair behind his ear when he was thinking, or the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he laughed. And then, I’d realized Katie was noticing too.

Last night, in the hushed darkness of the pillow fort, she’d finally confessed. “Soph, I really, really like James,” she’d whispered, her voice thick with sleep and a secret. My heart had done a funny little flip, a mix of dread and something else I couldn’t quite name. Because I liked him too. A lot. We’d spent the rest of the night talking about him, trying to decipher his every glance, his every word, as if he were some kind of code we needed to crack. It felt like a game, a thrilling, terrifying game, and I was determined to win.
