Mending Fences, One Word at a Time
The other girl accepts the apology. They begin to talk, tentatively at first, about their feelings – not just for James, but about how their fight made them feel and how much they value their friendship.
Katie’s voice was a little shaky, like a leaf caught in a breeze. "I... I accept your apology, Sophia." The words hung in the air between us, heavy and fragile, like glass ornaments we were afraid to touch. My own apology felt like it had tumbled out of me in a rush, a jumbled mess of "sorrys" and "I didn't mean its." Now, the silence that followed was even louder, filled with the echo of our harsh words and the uncomfortable ache in my chest.
I looked at Katie, really looked at her. Her eyes, usually so bright and full of mischief, were a little red around the edges, and she was fiddling with the hem of her sparkly unicorn pajamas. It was the same pair she’d worn to my birthday party last year, the ones we’d giggled about because they were *so* ridiculously glittery. Seeing her in them now, looking so subdued, made my stomach twist. This whole mess, this stupid fight over James, had taken something away from the sparkle, from the fun.
"I'm glad," I managed to say, my voice softer this time. I inched a little closer on the sleeping bag, the fluffy pink fabric a stark contrast to the storm that had raged inside us just hours before. "I really am. I hated fighting with you, Katie. It felt… wrong."
