A Tentative Apology

One of the girls, perhaps Sophia due to her insecurity or Katie due to her impulsiveness, makes the first move. A quiet apology is offered, a small olive branch extended in the darkness.

The midnight quiet of my bedroom was thick, not with the usual comfortable silence of being with Katie, but with a heavy, prickly stillness. Outside, the wind rustled the leaves of the old oak tree, a sound that usually lulled me to sleep but tonight only seemed to echo the restless thumping in my chest. The glow-in-the-dark stars on my ceiling, which usually felt like a friendly constellation, now seemed to mock me with their silent, unchanging glow. Katie was a lump under her sleeping bag, her breathing soft and even, a stark contrast to the churning in my stomach.

I’d messed up. Big time. All those little jabs, the way I’d tried to steer the conversation to James, the way I’d subtly pointed out his good qualities when Katie mentioned him… it had all crashed down like a poorly built tower. And then, the words. The sharp, careless words I’d thrown at her, fueled by my own fear and jealousy, words that had made her eyes well up and her voice crack. Seeing her hurt had been worse than any of my own anxieties.

My gaze drifted to her sleeping form. She looked so peaceful, so unaware of the storm brewing inside me. This was Katie, my Katie. We’d shared scraped knees, whispered secrets, and built entire worlds out of blankets and imagination. She was the one who knew how I liked my pizza crust extra crispy and who always hummed the same off-key tune when she was nervous. The thought of losing that, of letting a silly crush on James come between us, felt like losing a part of myself.
