The air in Aris Thorne’s cramped office felt thick, heavy with the unspoken dread that had settled over him like a second skin. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of weak afternoon sun that pierced the grimy window, illuminating stacks of research papers, geological maps, and a half-eaten sandwich that had long since lost its appeal. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, the grit of the paper clinging to his fingertips. For weeks, he’d been chasing ghosts, whispers in the data, anomalies that refused to be silenced. And now, finally, the whispers were coalescing into a roar.

It started with the tremors. Not the usual, everyday shudders of the earth that Kansas was accustomed to, but something… different. Deeper. More insistent. The seismographs at the university, usually as placid as a Kansas prairie on a windless day, had begun a subtle, rhythmic thrumming. At first, Aris had dismissed it as equipment malfunction, a glitch in the matrix. But the readings persisted, amplified by a network of smaller, almost imperceptible tremors radiating outwards from a single, unnervingly precise point.

He’d spent countless hours poring over seismic data, cross-referencing it with historical records, old mining surveys, even obscure folklore. Kansas, the heartland, the symbol of stability and earth-bound practicality, was supposed to be geologically inert. A vast, flat expanse built on ancient, stable bedrock. That was the narrative. That was what everyone believed. But the data… the data told a different story.
