The air tasted of ash and regret. It had been ten years since the Kansas caldera had exhaled its fury, a seismic sigh that had reshaped continents and plunged the world into a twilight of dust and despair. Elara traced the rim of her chipped enamel mug, the weak sunlight filtering through the grimy pane of their makeshift shelter. Outside, the wind, a perpetual mourner, whispered through skeletal trees and across fields that had long forgotten the touch of green.

She remembered the sky. Not the bruised, perpetual twilight of the early years, but the vibrant, impossible blue of a Kansas summer day, just before the ground began to tremble. She’d been eighteen, laughing with her father in their cornfield, the stalks taller than her head, a sea of gold and green stretching to the horizon. Then the shudder, the guttural roar from deep within the earth, and the world had turned upside down.

Now, the horizon was a jagged scar, the land irrevocably altered. The Sleeping Giant, they called it – the supervolcano that had slumbered for millennia beneath the unassuming plains, only to awaken with a catastrophic yawn. Its shadow, both literal and metaphorical, loomed large.
