Marek's Hoarded Stores

Marek, convinced of impending chaos, continues to hoard supplies, refusing to share. His pragmatism is overshadowed by his distrust and desire to protect only his own family.

The wind, once a gentle caress, had begun to sigh with a deeper, more troubled tone. It rustled through the drying corn stalks, a sound that should have been familiar and comforting, but now held a nervous edge. Marek stood at the edge of his small farm, his gaze fixed on the darkening horizon, not with the shared unease of his neighbours, but with a grim, almost satisfied, certainty. He saw the swirling mass in the sky not as a shared threat, but as a validation of his own foresight. While others gossiped and fretted, Marek had been busy.

His small shed, usually a jumble of farming tools and sacks of last season’s grain, was now a fortress of preparedness. Jars of preserved vegetables, plump with the summer’s bounty, lined the shelves. Bundles of dried herbs, their fragrant scent a promise of warmth and healing, hung from the rafters. He’d even managed to secure an extra barrel of salted fish from a travelling merchant, a transaction that had involved a considerable amount of his meagre savings and a few pointed, almost accusatory, remarks about the village’s lack of foresight.

“Foolishness,” he muttered, kicking a loose stone with his worn boot. “They’ll all come begging soon enough.” He pictured Jonas, his brow furrowed, his pride wounded, knocking on his door. The thought brought a flicker of something akin to pleasure to Marek’s stern face. Jonas, with his talk of community and shared burdens, had always been too quick to dismiss Marek’s practical concerns. Now, Marek would be the one with the full larder, the one whose family wouldn’t shiver with hunger or thirst when the sky finally unleashed its fury.
