Lina's Secret Sketchbook
Lina, ever observant, has been secretly sketching the cloud's intricate patterns. She believes these drawings hold a clue, a message the adults are too distracted to see.
Lina’s fingers, stained with charcoal, trembled slightly as she flipped through the pages of her worn sketchbook. The paper was thin, almost translucent, and the smudges of grey and black seemed to bleed into each other, much like the swirling mass that dominated her thoughts. Outside, the sky was a bruised purple, an unsettling color that seemed to seep into the very stones of their village. The air, once crisp and smelling of pine and damp earth, now carried a strange, metallic tang.
She sat in her favorite spot, the window seat in her small bedroom, a place usually bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sun. Today, however, the light was weak, filtered through an oppressive haze. The sketchbook lay open on her lap, filled with page after page of the cloud. Not just any cloud, but the cloud. It had started as a curious puff of white, innocent enough, but day by day, it had grown, twisting and churning, its edges darkening like a bruise.
Lina had been drawing it for weeks, long before anyone else seemed to notice its true strangeness. At first, it was just a game, a way to capture the shapes she saw in its billows – a galloping horse, a sleeping dragon, a giant’s face. But then, the shapes began to repeat, to form patterns. They weren’t random anymore. They were like intricate knots, loops, and swirls, a language she couldn’t quite decipher. She felt a pull, a certainty deep in her small chest, that these drawings held a secret, a message meant for her, or perhaps, for the village.
