The first rays of sun, soft and hesitant, painted the sodden fields in hues of pale gold. It was a hesitant light, as if the sky itself was still a little shy after the night’s fury. The wind, which had howled like a hungry wolf, had softened to a gentle sigh, carrying the clean, earthy scent of rain-washed soil and the faint perfume of bruised wildflowers. The village of Žydrūnai, battered but unbroken, began to stir.

Lina, her hair still tangled from sleep and the night’s anxieties, peered through the window of her small room. The world outside was a tapestry of glistening leaves, puddles reflecting the timid sky, and the hushed movements of villagers emerging from their homes. Anya, her eyes wide and reflecting the dawn’s gentle light, sat beside her, her usual quietude now tinged with a profound sense of relief. Tomas, ever the first to embrace the new day, was already outside, his small frame a bundle of energy as he surveyed the damage with a mixture of awe and determination.

“Look, Lina,” Anya whispered, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. “The big oak by the river… it’s still standing.”
