The first hint of dawn was a shy blush against the bruised sky. It crept over the ragged line of trees that bordered the village, painting the torn clouds in hues of pale rose and soft lavender. The wind, which had raged with such ferocity through the night, had finally sighed itself into a tired whisper, and the relentless drumming of rain had softened to a gentle patter. Lina, huddled under a thick woolen blanket in her small bed, could hear it – the quiet settling of the world after its violent outburst.

She pushed herself up, her small body stiff and sore. Her room, usually so neat, was a mess of fallen books and scattered drawings. Her precious sketchbook lay open on the floor, its pages ruffled by the storm’s breath. Outside, the usual morning chorus of birds was absent, replaced by the drip-drip-drip from the eaves and the mournful creak of a loose shutter somewhere down the lane.

Anya was already awake, sitting by the window, her gaze fixed on the world outside. Her usually bright eyes held a quiet solemnity, like pools reflecting the new, subdued light. Lina joined her, her heart a little heavy. The storm had passed, but the silence it left behind felt different, charged with the weight of what had happened.
