The wind howled like a hungry wolf around the sturdy walls of the village hall, a sound that was both terrifying and, strangely, a comfort. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of damp wool, woodsmoke, and the nervous sweat of the villagers huddled together. Lina, nestled between Tomas and Anya, watched as the last few stragglers, their faces etched with worry, were ushered inside. The heavy oak door creaked shut, sealing them in a shared shelter against the raging tempest outside.

Candles flickered on rough-hewn tables, casting dancing shadows that elongated familiar faces, making them seem both distant and intensely present. The earlier bickering, the sharp words and resentful glances that had been as much a part of the approaching storm as the darkening sky, had finally subsided, replaced by a weary quietude. It was a quiet born not of agreement, but of a shared, overwhelming need for safety.

Jonas, his usual gruffness softened by the circumstances, moved among the villagers, his presence a steady anchor. He spoke in low, reassuring tones, offering a warm blanket here, a shared cup of broth there. Marek, surprisingly, had also shed some of his stubborn pride, his eyes darting around, a flicker of concern for his own family, and perhaps, for the village as a whole. He’d even shared a portion of his hoarded supplies, a gesture that had drawn quiet nods of approval.
