The sky, which had been a bruised purple for hours, finally surrendered. A great, ragged tear ripped across its surface, and the heavens opened with a roar that swallowed all other sounds. The wind, no longer a whisper or a howl, became a living thing, a monstrous hand that tore at the thatched roofs and rattled the very foundations of the wooden houses. Rain, thick and cold, hammered down not in drops but in sheets, blurring the world into a grey, churning chaos.

Lina, huddled with Tomas and Anya in the small, sturdy cellar of her home, pressed her face against the damp earth wall. Even here, the storm’s fury was a palpable presence. The house above creaked and groaned like an old man in pain, and the insistent drumming of rain on the cellar door was a relentless, unnerving beat. She clutched her worn sketchbook, its pages damp but miraculously intact, feeling the familiar weight of it a small comfort against the swirling fear. She’d been sketching the cloud, trying to capture its strange, swirling patterns, convinced it was more than just weather. But the sheer force of the storm, the way it seemed to shake the very world, was testing even his boundless courage. He thought of the small, intricately carved wooden bird that sat on his grandfather’s mantelpiece, a piece he’d accidentally chipped years ago, a secret he’d guarded fiercely. The thought of his grandfather, Jonas, so stoic and strong, facing this maelstrom, made his stomach clench with a different kind of fear.
