The sterile scent of disinfectant, usually a comforting aroma of dedication and hard work, now clung to Kelly’s senses like a shroud. It was a smell that had once evoked the thrill of polished floors and the crisp snap of leotards, but now, it was inextricably linked to the sickening crunch of bone and Emma’s strangled cry. The competition, once the shimmering beacon at the end of their arduous training, had morphed into a looming specter, its triumphant fanfare drowned out by the insistent echo of Kelly’s own racing heart.

Two weeks. It had been two weeks since the tumbling mat had become a stage for something far more brutal than a dance move. Two weeks since the air had vibrated with not just the impact of aerials and tucks, but with the jarring thud of Emma hitting the floor. Kelly found herself replaying that moment with a morbid fascination, dissecting each fraction of a second as if it held the key to some hidden truth. She saw it again: the synchronized ascent, the practiced grace of their front aerials, the powerful launch into back tucks. Then, the shift. The subtle, almost imperceptible nudge that sent Emma’s carefully calculated trajectory spiraling.

She’ll be fine. Just enough to throw her off for the competition.” Chloe and Maya had readily agreed, their faces alight with a wicked anticipation that had sent a tremor of unease through Kelly even then. Jessica and Sarah had followed suit, their loyalty to Brianna a palpable force. But Kelly… Kelly had hesitated. She remembered the cold knot in her stomach, the unspoken dread that had coiled within her. It had felt wrong, deeply wrong, even before the sickening reality of Emma’s broken ankle had unfolded.
