Chapter 5
Kelly's Unease
While the other five celebrate Emma's downfall, Kelly feels a growing knot of dread. The ease of their victory, the severity of Emma's injury, it all sits wrong. A secret begins to form within her.
Kelly watched them, a tight knot forming in her stomach. Brianna was already strategizing, her voice sharp and bright, dissecting Emma’s absence as if it were a winning lottery ticket. Chloe, ever the echo, nodded enthusiastically, her eyes gleaming with a shared, triumphant malice. Maya and Olivia were giggling, whispering behind cupped hands, no doubt replaying the sickening crunch of bone against the polished studio floor. Even Sophia, usually the quietest of their pack, had a flush of victory on her cheeks, a rare smile gracing her lips. They were a pack of hyenas, circling a fallen prey, and Kelly felt like a lone wolf, suddenly out of place amongst the kill.
It had been so… easy. Too easy. The plan, hatched in hushed tones over lukewarm coffee in the deserted parking lot after practice, had seemed almost theatrical in its simplicity. Add a flourish, a little extra push, a subtle shift in timing during the aerial sequence. A little nudge, not a shove. A moment of unexpected pressure. That’s what they’d agreed on. A flawless execution of their own, designed to showcase their superior skill while simultaneously highlighting Emma’s supposed overconfidence. They’d practiced it, not the move itself, but the timing, the coordination of their own individual aerials and tucks, ensuring they’d flow seamlessly, creating a momentary chaos around Emma. They’d studied her routine, noted the precise second she’d launch into her signature front aerial, the apex of her back tuck. It was a calculated risk, they’d told themselves. A performance art piece disguised as sabotage.
But the sound… the sound of Emma’s cry, sharp and ragged, had ripped through the studio, silencing the triumphant music that had been playing. It wasn’t the graceful thud of a dancer landing imperfectly. It was a brittle, sickening snap. And then the scream, raw and primal, that had echoed in the sudden, terrifying stillness. Kelly remembered the immediate aftermath. The frantic calls for a trainer, the hushed whispers of the coach, the paramedics arriving with their flashing lights painting the studio windows in an eerie, pulsating glow. Emma, pale and trembling, her leg already swelling grotesquely, her eyes wide with shock and pain. The competition, her dream, shattered in an instant.
