The afternoon sun, a pale, indifferent disc in the sky, cast long, skeletal shadows across the village green. Dust motes danced in the shafts of light filtering through the leaves of the ancient oak, a silent ballet performed for an audience of none. It was in this hushed theatre of the ordinary that I found Anna, perched on the low stone wall bordering her family’s garden, her gaze lost somewhere beyond the neatly trimmed hedges. She often sat there, a small, still figure against the backdrop of the bustling, yet somehow muted, life of our village.
I approached slowly, my footsteps muted by the dry earth. The air hung heavy with the scent of drying hay and the distant, melancholic bleating of sheep. I knew this path, this quiet meandering towards her. It was a familiar route, a well-worn track in the landscape of my solitude, and Anna, in her own way, was a landmark along it.
“Anna,” I said, my voice barely disturbing the stillness.
