Chapter 8
The Loom's Steady Beat
Jakub spends time in his father's workshop. The rhythmic work is hypnotic, but his mind drifts. He tries to connect with the craft, but his heart remains elsewhere, questioning the value of such labor.
The workshop was a cavern of splintered light and the scent of pine. Dust motes danced in the shafts that pierced the gloom, each a tiny, fleeting star in a universe of wood shavings. My father’s hands, broad and calloused, moved with a practiced grace over the rough planks of oak. The rasp of the plane was a low, steady hum, a heartbeat of the wood, a rhythm that had echoed through these walls for generations. He was shaping a table leg, his brow furrowed in concentration, a silent testament to the enduring strength of his craft. I sat nearby, tasked with sorting dowels, the smooth, cool cylinders fitting into my palm like promises yet unfulfilled.
The air was thick with the smell of sawdust, a perfume of honest labor, and beneath it, the fainter, sweeter aroma of linseed oil. Each stroke of the plane, each tap of the hammer, was a note in the symphony of the workshop, a song of permanence, of things built to last. My father believed in permanence. He believed in the solid earth beneath our feet, the unwavering cycle of the seasons, and the unshakeable foundation of our family’s legacy. His hands understood this. They spoke a language of joinery and tensile strength, of wood grain and the slow, patient transformation of raw material into something useful, something enduring.
My own hands, however, felt clumsy, inadequate. The dowels, so perfectly formed, seemed to mock my own internal disquiet. I turned one over and over, its smooth surface offering no solace, no connection. It was a piece of a whole, yes, but what was the whole? What was this endless cycle of shaping, of building, of providing? The rhythm of the workshop, meant to be a lullaby, instead became a insistent pulse against my temples, a reminder of the stillness within me that refused to be soothed by the outer world’s steady beat.
