Smoke curled lazily from its chimney, a thin grey ribbon against the bruised twilight sky. Josef, the village elder, was a man carved from time itself. His hands, gnarled like ancient roots, had tilled the same soil for generations, and his eyes, the colour of faded denim, held a wisdom that transcended mere years. He was a repository of the village’s history, a living testament to the unwritten laws that governed our lives.

I knocked, the sound swallowed by the quiet evening. The door creaked open, revealing Josef framed in the warm glow of his hearth. He raised a bushy eyebrow, a slow smile spreading across his weathered face. “Jakub. The forest has sent you, has it?” His voice was like the low rumble of distant thunder, a sound that vibrated with an ancient knowing.
