The late afternoon sun, a tired ember against the vast canvas of the sky, cast long, skeletal shadows across the village square. Dust motes danced in its fading beams, tiny universes in their own right, oblivious to the weight of unspoken things that settled upon us like the evening mist. Anna found me by the old well, its stone lip worn smooth by generations of hands, much like the predictable paths of our lives. She held a small bouquet of wild asters, their purple heads bowed as if in deference to the quietude that always seemed to cling to me.

Her eyes, wide and earnest, searched mine, and in their depths, I saw a reflection of the life she envisioned for us, a life woven from the familiar threads of our village. It was a life painted in hues of warm hearths, shared meals, and children’s laughter echoing through sturdy walls. She spoke of it with a quiet certainty, a gentle unfolding that felt as natural and inevitable as the changing of the seasons.
