The air in Josef’s small cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and old wood, a comforting, earthy perfume that always clung to him. Outside, the last vestiges of twilight bled into the deeper indigo of night, painting the sky in strokes of bruised purple and faint rose. I sat on the worn stool by the hearth, the embers casting a ruddy glow on his weathered face, each line a testament to a life lived under the watchful eye of the sun and the moon. He was mending a fishing net, his thick fingers moving with a practiced grace that belied their age, the fine twine looping and knotting with a quiet rhythm that mirrored the slow pulse of the village.

“You watch the world like a stranger, Jakub,” he said, his voice a low rumble, not unkind, but observant. He didn’t look up from his work, his gaze fixed on the intricate dance of his hands. “As if it belongs to someone else, and you are merely a visitor, waiting for your carriage to arrive.”

I shifted on the stool, the rough wood digging into my thighs. “Perhaps I am,” I murmured, my voice barely a breath against the crackling fire. “Perhaps I am still waiting for the carriage that will take me… somewhere else.”
